Results of crah-tests: an unbelted passenger can kill the driver
In the frame of the social campaign, "Complexities of transition" VCIOM (Russian Public Opinion Research Center) conducted a survey, which showed that 76% of drivers constantly use seat belts during the trip.

Ten years ago, that was only 32%. Today, only 5% of drivers do not fasten, 10% do it periodically. The figures are encouraging, but life suggests that percentages that ignore such an important element of passive safety as a belt appear in hundreds of people lives.
Therefore, the safety belts reduce the severity of the consequences in case of accidents. Yes, the belt is not the only element of passive safety in the car. Probably, automatic blocking of speed and a safety airbag are much more modern and advanced protection technologies for drivers. However, not all cars have, for example, a folding steering column, crumpled and soft interior elements, safety glasses, etc. Nevertheless, the safety belt according to the traffic regulation must be in every car. Moreover, according to the legislation its use is mandatory, and for violators established fines: 1000 rubles: 1000 for the driver and 500 for the passenger.
Citizens, who do not fasten, obviously rely on a lucky chance - they think it is better to fly out of the car in an accident than to be squeezed inside. Meanwhile the belt can save a life even at the most serious road accident. Recently in Kamchatka, the SUV driver, whose car is certainly equipped with all kinds of new security systems, was driving along the forest road. The car overturned, and the driver was thrown out of the cabin, as he was not fastened. The man died on the spot, because his car covered him. If he fastened his belt, he would have all chances to stay alive.
Another accident was on the route Kursk - Ponyri: frontal collision "Audi" and "the fourteenth". A young person in a domestic car was killed - flew into the windshield and hit the ground. Next to him in the car sat his bride. She was fastened. The girl had a black and crimson track from the seat belt, the strap almost hit the body, but she stayed alive.
Some are sure that the belts are not needed in the city: they say, you do not drive much. "All crash tests take place at city speeds of 54 or 60 km/h," explained Denis Zagarin, Deputy Director General of FSUE NAMI. - Moreover, you can crash into the pillar. Then the critical speed will be less than 20 or 30 km/h. Besides, it is akin to suicide to not fasten in a car equipped with airbags!" The airbag opens at a speed of 200 km/h. That is, a man flies with a giant speed ahead, and then another blow to the airbag. It is like being hit by a blacksmith hammer.
The driver is in charge
"The use of a seatbelt reduces the risk of death by 2-3 times in a frontal collision, 1.8 times with a side impact and 5 times with a rollover," explains the auto expert Dmitry Stebakov. - For those who sit in front, the risk of serious injury in the event of an accident or even death is reduced by 40-50%. As for passengers in the back seat, for them the risk of injury is reduced by a quarter."
With passengers who pay no attention to the seat belts, the situation is much sadder than with drivers. According to the VCIOM, while 66% of passengers are permanently fastened on the front seat, only 20% of passengers use seat belt on the back seat. "It is the norm to be belted behind the wheel, and this is a very positive trend," said Deputy Chief of the Russian State Traffic Police Major-General Vladimir Kuzin. "However, passengers sometimes ignore safety belts, forgetting that they can save lives and health in an accident. At this moment the driver should help because he should ensure that all the passengers in his car are fastened."
The same VCIOM survey showed that only 30% of drivers who use seat belts themselves control their use by passengers of the rear seats. Meanwhile, as the analysis of 100 thousand road accidents showed, the non-fastened passengers of the rear seats pose the greatest danger to the driver and front passenger. Almost 80% of passengers in front seats could survive in the event of an accident if the rear passengers were fastened!
A video with crash tests is one of the most understandable ways to see what a disaster can happen, if someone neglects the safety belt. On one of these experiments, two adult unfastened dummies and one child in the child restraint device were seated in the car in the rear seat. After simulating an accident at a speed of 50 km/h, unbelted passengers abruptly move forward, followed by a terrible blow to the ceiling and the driver's seat. Load on the thigh with knee impact on the front seat - no less than a ton. As a result, such passengers got leg fractures, concussion and even a fracture of the cervical vertebrae. However, this is not the worst: one of the passengers on the rebound with a swing sits on the child, who seems to have been saved by the belts in the child in the child restraint device. Even a 6-year-old child is capable of being killed by 75-80 kg, which with acceleration falls on him from above.
So that all adults who sit in the car should remember that in an accident, unbelted and un-fixed people and objects move uncontrollably through the salon. There are many combinations depending on how the accident occurred, but the result is usually sad.
Of course, the driver is responsible for the safety of the children in the car. Fortunately, nowadays more and more parents understand the importance of using child restraint devices. It is proved that they allow reducing by 80% the risk of injury to children under the age of 4 years, and children from 5 to 9 years - by 52%.
In July the traffic regulation has been amended, and now it is possible to transport children from 7 to 11 years inclusively in the back seat of the car and in the cab of the lorry, not only using child restraints that correspond to the weight and height of the child, but also simply fastened with a safety belt (without the use of adapters, etc.). As for the front seat: for children under 12 years, a special seat will remain mandatory, and the design should match the weight and height of the child. Up to 7 years of age, children must be transported in the child restraint device.
The traffic police strongly recommends transporting children in the child restraint even after reaching the age of 7 years. Of course, there can also be exceptions: for example, when a child by his physical data doesn’t fit to the child restraint, and when it comes to transporting a disabled child, etc. "Yes, there are certain difficulties with the seats: parents often buy them, guided only by the age of his child, forgetting about the fact that at the age of 8 their son or daughter can have the growth of an 11-year-old schoolboy. Therefore, to choose this attribute in the car is better together with the child, - Denis Zagarin insists. - Unfortunately, in the regulation the division takes place only by weight. The largest group is the third: it is prescribed from 34-36 kg. Growth parameters are not specified. That is why it is recommended to buy a child restraint device with the child. To be able, like clothes, try on. Therefore, there is a recommendation: weight can be taken into account - compare, because the holding capacity depends on the weight. And growth alone - by fitting."
The fears of specialists are mostly connected in relation to children, fastened with regular belts. Yes, today the cabin of each car is equipped with belts, equipped with a mechanism for adjusting the height of the strap and its tension. However, there is one significant "but": the adjustment of the height of the safety belt is limited. That is, if the passenger's height is less than 150 cm, the belt simply cannot ensure its safety. Therefore, experts insist that children up to the age of 12 need to select the appropriate child restraint. Seat belts in child restraints, if you choose it strictly by weight and height of the child, pass exactly on the shoulder, without touching the face and neck, in contrast to the regular belt of the car.
For the entire 2016 on the roads of Russia were killed 1612 people, because of violations of the rules for the use of seat belts by drivers. According to the majority of experts, the most dangerous maneuver on the road is the exit to the oncoming traffic during the overtaking. By the way, the traffic police estimated that every 9th road accident in Russia is associated with a trip to the oncoming traffic, while on average in the country accounts for almost every third (29.1%) deaths. "The most difficult outcome is a frontal impact with the oncoming car," said the president of the expert center "Movement without danger" Natalya Agre. - At this moment, the speeds of the cars of the road accident participants is summed up. If you consider that most overtaking is made on country roads and at high speeds, the outcome of a frontal attack for an unbelted person is often lethal."
For its part, the State Traffic Police of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation constantly conducts explanatory work among road users, recalling, among other things, the effectiveness of seat belts. Together with the Russian Union of Motor Insurers and the Expert Center "Movement without danger" over the past 10 years, a number of social campaigns ("Fasten the seat belt!", "Belts", "Child restraint device to children!") were held, during which drivers and passengers were told why they need to be fastened in a car
